editing

Every writer needs an editor. What can I do for you?

Editing is more than a spell check! (Though of course I do that too.) As a professional editor, I can help you:

  • Write language that flows. When you’re used to thinking in another language, your word order and choices can reflect that language. As a native English writer, I make sure nothing gets lost in translation and the reader focuses on your ideas instead of awkward syntax.

  • Ensure your word choices and style are right for your audience. Are you writing for technical professionals or their non-technical managers? Do they prefer British or American English (or a personalised mix of both)? Are there words or sections they expect to see?

  • Format the text so it complies with any relevant style guides. Texts like grant applications and academic journal articles have strict style requirements, and I’ve seen them all. Don’t let a missing section or a poorly formatted reference list destroy your chance of acceptance!

  • Check your consistency. Have you defined all your acronyms? Are the names of things correct and the same throughout your text? Have you kept to one verb tense (unless there’s a reason not to)? And are your words always spelled the same way (like the pesky -ize vs. -ise)?

In short, my job is to erase the errors and smooth out the language so your readers can concentrate on your message.

If the English language made any sense, a catastrophe would be an apostrophe with fur.
